Common hand injuries after a car crash

A car accident can result in various types of injuries, with some of these being more serious than others. Often, the hands are exposed in collisions because people use them to brace themselves and protect their heads and faces.

This means that the hands can be seriously injured. What are some of the most common types of hand injuries associated with car crashes?

Fractures and dislocations

In many cases, the bones in the hand may be fractured in a car accident. This is usually the result of blunt-force trauma. Depending on the nature of the break, recovery times can vary. In serious cases, surgical procedures may be needed to repair the damage.

It’s also possible for the fingers to be dislocated in a crash. While these types of injuries can heal quite quickly, they can be very painful. Dislocated fingers often occur when the driver grips the steering wheel tightly to brace for impact.

Soft tissue and nerve damage

Nerve damage and soft tissue damage can be a complication from fractures and dislocations, or they can be stand-alone injuries. These types of injuries include cuts, sprains, and damage to ligaments and tendons. When the nerves are damaged, this limits the movement of the hands. In serious cases, nerve damage may be irreversible, leaving the victim with a permanent disability.

Other types of hand injuries include:

  • Puncture wounds
  • Amputations
  • Swelling and bruising.

If your hands were injured after a car accident, you may be entitled to financial compensation. To claim this, you will most likely need to show that the crash was caused by another person’s negligence. Seeking legal guidance can help you to do this.
