Wrong-way collisions can be devastating

On Behalf of | Feb 3, 2025 | Auto Accidents

Wrong-way collisions occur when a driver heading in the wrong direction on a road or highway collides with another driver. As the years go by, more and more of these accidents are happening. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that wrong-way collisions cause approximately 500 fatalities every year.

Wrong-way collisions can lead to serious physical injuries for the vehicle’s occupants, such as fractures, spinal cord injuries, damage to internal organs and traumatic brain injuries. Fatalities are also possible. Once stabilized, the recovery period frequently entails long-term rehabilitation therapy sessions to deal with the physical, emotional and psychological toll of the accident and its aftermath.

Why do wrong-way collisions occur?

Wrong-way crashes can be deadly due to their high velocity and impact, which is often head-on. There are several reasons why these types of accidents occur.

  • Driving while intoxicated is a major contributing factor to wrong-way collisions. Alcohol can lead drivers to make poor decisions, have slow response times and lose control of their motor skills.
  • Distracted driving can be a contributing factor in a wrong-way collision. Eating, playing with the radio, talking on the phone or texting can cause a driver to take their eyes off the road, resulting in catastrophic consequences.
  • Fog, heavy rain or snow are some of the poor weather conditions that make it difficult for drivers to see road signs and lane markings. A motorist may inadvertently end up driving on the wrong side of the road.
  • Age can affect a person’s ability to safely drive and react on the road. For example, confusion or the inability to see clearly can cause them to enter the highway via the exit ramp.

Wrong-way collisions can cause long-term physical pain and disabilities. They may even prove fatal. If you or a loved one was injured by a wrong-way driver, seek legal assistance.
